About the Overthinking Index

A free, 8-question self-awareness quiz that takes about a minute. Each question is an everyday situation, like replaying something you said wrong before bed, or wondering what you did when a message goes unanswered. Answer by how often it happens to you.

You'll get a score from 0 to 24 in one of four levels: Still Water (0–6), Ripples (7–12), Undercurrents (13–18) and Inner Storm (19–24). Each level comes with a line from Laozi or Zhuangzi as your prescription, and a plain-language suggestion for what to do.

Questions

What is overthinking?

It's worrying, second-guessing and comparing before anything has even happened, until you feel drained without having done much. It's very common, and it has nothing to do with being lazy.

How is the score calculated?

Each of the 8 questions scores by frequency: almost never 0, sometimes 1, often 2, that's totally me 3. The total runs from 0 to 24.

Is this a diagnosis?

No. It's a small quiz to help you notice your state, and it can't replace a professional assessment. If sleeplessness or low mood has been affecting your life for a while, please talk with a doctor or therapist.
